If driving is how you make your living, you can benefit from having a good GPS navigation system in the cab. You can rely on Garmin to get you where you’re going. Garmin has been making GPS devices for years and has become an industry leader for good reason. The dezl 580 truck navigation system is designed for professional truckers and incorporates all the features you could ask for.


It’s similar in size to other GPS devices at about 6″ x 4″ x 1″ and weigh in a one pound, which is still pretty solid given the dimensions. It utilizes a rechargeable 820 mAh lithium-ion battery good for up to two hours, but that’s disconnected. Using it in you cab on a charger, it’ll last as long as you need it. It has a glossy black casing and a vibrant 5″ WQVGA touch-screen display at a high-res 480 x 272 pixels. The dezl 580 also includes 16 GB of memory and an available card slot for adding more. Custom Truck Routing

The dezl 580 comes preloaded with detailed maps for North America, including lifetime updates. These maps provide truck-related tips such as bridge heights, weight limits, hazardous curves, school zones, and more for most highways and major roads. All you need to do is enter information to create a vehicle profile and the 580 will plot the best route for your truck’s size and load.

It will guide you along the route with voice prompts and bright on-screen arrows based on real-life landmarks instead of just street signs and intersections. You can also tap into a bird’s eye view from overhead if necessary.

The Trip Planner allows you modify routes by simply touching the screen, and save them for future trips. It also includes a feature that lets you swap trailers with a single button for planning your next route.

Break Planning

You can also plan breaks along the road. The 580 lets you plot stops for food, fuel, rest stops, parking spots, and ATMs, to name just a few amenities, with timely alerts so you don’t miss them.

It comes with TripAdvisor integration, so you can also find sites of interest like recommended hotels, dining, shopping, national monuments, historic sites, amusement parks, and other points of interest you might want to visit. All of these are searchable through the included FourSquare app.

You can also integrate the dezl 580 with Garmin’s eLog ELD for D.O.T. compliance through automated tracking and digital records. This Garmin model is also fully compatible with a range of Garmin-made backup cameras. For dispatchers and managers, the dezl 580 also comes with pre-installed features for coordinating and monitoring multiple vehicles.

Directory of Services

Garmin also supplies a built-in directory for locating truck and trailer services along your route. This includes truck stops, lodging, weigh stations, public Wi-Fi hotspots, parking, and more. You can also search or filter truck stops by the brand name or the amenities they offer, such as showers or truck washing. Garmin also includes a list of over 30,000 repair locations across the U.S. and Canada, noting those with after-hours service. The dezl 580 also a Service History Log so you can keep track of any repairs or maintenance, plus monitor tire pressure and mileage.

The dezl 580 will pair up easily with your Bluetooth compatible smartphone. It works with both Android and iPhone mobile devices. The 580 has a built-in microphone and volume-adjustable speakers that are loud enough so you can hold conversations in heavy traffic noise. You can also read text messages straight from the dezl 580’s display. You can even do this without taking your phone out of your pocket. With the built-in Wi-Fi, you can also get the latest local traffic and weather updates over your Garmin whenever you want them.

The dezl 580 is cheaper than some comparable models, yet it suggests quality the moment you take it out of the box. It’s hefty feel, elegant design, and bright, crisp screen are all very satisfying. The on-screen options are fairly straight-forward and easy to navigate. Everything works as advertised to make your long hauls both easier and more interesting.

Even there’s any complaints, it’s the short battery life if you choose to unplug and take the 580 with you on your out-of-truck excursions. Of course, you shouldn’t get lost with a Garmin GPS navigator right in your pocket, but it would be nice to have more than two hours of service if you wanted to take an afternoon of sight seeing or ran into problems. But two hours of battery life is actually longer than most previous versions, and really not too bad if you take into account all the things the dezl 580 can do for you.

Considering all the features it comes with straight out of the box, and add voice recognition technology for spoken commands, automatic Wi-Fi updates, and extensive, detailed maps, and the Garmin dezl 580 becomes a trucker’s best friend. It will get your from one point to the next without complications, yet you can customize and save your routes to plan your ideal trips.

Although there are a lot of competitor units out there with some good features, you’ll have a hard time finding the total package offered with the dezl 580, and at an affordable price and proven quality. You can get a great deal on Garmin dezl 580 here.

Misses several scales throughout Montana, Idaho. Has routed me down restricted roads. Missed state boarder crossings. Warned of steep down grade while starting up a steep grade. Did not warn of Lewiston Hill or Whitebird Hill. Can not find Boise Stage stop. Gets lost second time to other truck stop.
I’m 12.5 ft high 95 ft long pulling doubles weighing between 105,000 and 110,000. How long before it puts me on a road I can’t turn around on or up against a 10 ft bridge?

Works well, with a lot details you can display on split screen, like where to pick up your exit ramp. There are so many details to explore it can make anyone’s rrip easier: low bridges, in-depth info on truck routes, and anything else you’ll need. It’s amazing, This is the GPS a truck driver should have!

I’ve tried other GPS systems and I’m very impressed with this one. So glad I bought it! There were a couple times it sent me down the wrong road, but other GPS devices do much worse, so a smart driver should always have an Atlas along. If I plan out the route beforehand, 90 percent of the time or better this Garmin unit matches up perfectly. You can confuse it if you make unexpected turn-offs, but on the whole I love it. It looks sharp and has been a real help.

I got this for my trucker husband and he loves it. It’s so much simpler to use than the Rand McNally tablet he used before. Now he can just preview and customize the routes the Garmin 580 shows him.

Garmin does not recognize intersections and roads that have been existence for years. The trip planning feature is supposed to let you browse maps to find next location on the map, but instead of taking you to the most recent destination that you entered in a trip, it backs you all the way out to the original destination. Then if you try and find the next destination there is no marker or any indication of the other destinations that you have already entered. So, not only can you not find any of the destinations that you entered after the original destination, you can not even find by using the map browser or the intersection feature to find the following destinations. This makes this Garmin 580 LMT or 570 LMT worthless. Probably 1/2 of all intersections cannot be found and 1/3 of all even US hwys cannot be found when browsing map. This is even if you enable more detail on the maps. I spent $300 on this GPS and it is in my opinion worthless. I have had it for a little over 1.5 months and will still be trying to return it.

Very satisfied with this GPS! I’ve been hauling doubles for years now, so I’m thrilled I have a GPS that you can configure for these loads. It links up easily with a smartphone so I can get the latest traffic updates without touching the GPS. Works even better than linking a second GPS like I used to do. Best of all, it’s been VERY accurate.

Very good trucker’s GPS. The Wi-Fi is terrific; it’s nice that you can update the software without having to use a laptop. One problem I do have is that neither the 770 or 580 show weigh stations. It does show plenty of other upcoming issues, like railroad crossings if your hauling Hazmat. In fact, there are notifications I don’t really need.

I don’t know about the mapping in the lower 48, but here in Alaska I keep getting routed through roads that a big truck can’t use or roads that don’t exist anymore.

I may be too hard on Garmin; it’s probably one of the finest GPS units out there, but they really need to update ALL their information.

Excellent GPS unit. It has one of the best screens I’ve seen, absolutely crystal clear. And even greasy fingerprints wipe right off. The Garmin runs the Android OS very smoothly and offers a lot of premium features. The GPS itself feels solid and well-made. So far I have no complaints about the accuracy of the routing and maps. The Garmin is replacing my old Tomtom Trucker and there’s a huge improvement in quality. This new version is even better than the dezl 770 I tried. Good work, Garmin!

Happy with this purchase, as it has some nice features, like the school zone alarm. There are some destinations the unit can’t identify and I have to Google them. Unfortunately you have to type in the exact address. I was expecting something more like Google Maps.

Camera is excellent, but I really bought it for hauling my own trailer, not my commercial trips. I like some of the trucker notices , but wish it had more options for private vehicles. The suction cup mount is also pretty fussy, so I had trouble getting it to stay put. The unit is fairly heavy and didn’t want to stay put. The power cable is sturdy, but too thick to be tucking away out of sight. It did pair easily with my phone, so overall I’d have to say this is a quality device.

Pretty good, but a number of shortcomings.
1) Truck Routes listed not really comprehensive; many times suggested routes take you well out of your way to avoid roads that truly are rated to take a large truck (Midwest)
2) adding a city to route through on your way to a final destination will/can take you well out your way, especially if you chose the ‘pass through’ option, rather than going to the ‘center’ of the city. Sometimes 400km out of your way. Use with caution; but as always never mindlessly trust any GPS.
3) This may well apply to any ‘trucking’ GPS ( it DOES apply to at least several), but this GPS will use country border crossings on any road rated as a truck route; but many of these cannot really support loaded truck traffic since they are not commercial crossings. Adding a ‘way-point’ does not always help, since it may route you across the border at a non-commercial crossing to reach the way-point (commercial crossing) from the wrong side of the border. This may be the shortest/faster route, but not even a little helpful.
Has many pluses, as well:
1) voice recognition really quite good; you may need to talk loudly in the cab at speed to get a reaction, but it generally gets it right
2) display is nice and bright in daylight, and yet dims nicely on its own come nightfall – no need to manually adjust brightness
3) WiFi updates look like they will work well; no computer needed
4) will notify you of incoming emails, and offer to read them to you – never expected that one!
5) advanced weather radar kind of neat, for $5 a year subscription
