The Garmin eLog makes sense for one specific buyer: an owner-operator
or small operation that wants a focused, no-subscription electronic
logging device with records stored locally. The hardware is a one-time
purchase, the Garmin eLog app is free, and there are no subscription
fees.

Look at a broader ELD platform instead if you need remote fleet
visibility, IFTA reporting, dispatch functions, or

How the Garmin eLog Works

The Garmin eLog, part number 010-01876-00, has two essential parts:
an adapter that plugs into the truck’s diagnostic port and the Garmin
eLog app on a compatible mobile device.

The adapter connects to the vehicle and records Hours of Service
information, which the app organizes into Records of Duty Status. In the
app, a driver can check remaining drive hours by day or week, review
unidentified records when applicable, certify records, and submit daily
logs to the motor carrier.

Setup is more than plugging in the adapter. It must be paired and
configured with the app, and the setup includes an administrator account
and individual driver profiles. Until that configuration is complete,
functionality is limited.

Garmin documents the records as stored locally on the device running
the app. That makes backup and device management part of the operating
routine rather than something handled through a managed fleet
portal.

Installation and
Compatibility

The adapter installs directly into a 9-pin J1939 diagnostic port. If
the truck has a 6-pin J1708 port, Garmin documents an included adapter
cable for that connection.

Before buying, identify the truck’s exact diagnostic port. Do not
assume the adapter fits every truck or that a similar-looking connector
is enough. The current verified Garmin instructions establish the J1939
and J1708 paths; other port types require separate confirmation.

The vehicle must be off during installation. The adapter also needs
to be secured where it cannot interfere with pedals, controls, or the
driver’s feet.

The other compatibility check is the phone or tablet. Check the
current Google Play or Apple App Store requirements for the exact mobile

Trailers, shipments, and DVIR

Garmin’s current manual documents trailer and shipment records and
the ability to create a driver vehicle inspection report. These are
useful supporting functions, but they do not turn the eLog into a
complete fleet-management system.

USB and Bluetooth inspection

The system supports inspection transfer through a compatible FAT32
USB device or through its documented Bluetooth workflow. The roadside
process and backup requirements deserve their own setup before the first
working trip.

Duty Status,
Personal Conveyance, and Yard Moves

The Garmin eLog app includes On Duty, Off Duty, Driving, Sleeper
Berth, Personal Conveyance, and Yard Moves statuses.

Personal Conveyance and Yard Moves are not automatically available.
An administrator must enable them for the driver’s profile before they
can be selected.

The vehicle must be stopped to change duty status manually. The
adapter automatically switches to Driving when the diagnostic port
reports a speed of at least 5 mph.

An administrator can also enable a Yard Move exemption that persists
through an engine restart. Under that setting, the app switches to
Driving above 20 mph.

These are product controls, not a decision about whether a particular
movement qualifies. Current rules, carrier authorization, and the facts
of the trip control the proper status. Select the appropriate category
before the movement begins and follow the current Garmin and FMCSA
instructions.

Using Garmin
eLog With a Current dēzl Navigator

The eLog can display HOS information on several current Garmin dēzl
navigators. Garmin’s current manuals document this integration for the
dēzl OTR620 and OTR720, dēzlCam OTR725, and dēzl OTR820 and OTR1020.

The workflow has three parts:

  1. Pair the eLog adapter with the eLog app on a compatible mobile
    device.
  2. Pair the dēzl navigator with that mobile device.
  3. Enable the eLog-to-dēzl connection.

The navigator is an additional display, not the eLog adapter. The
mobile device running the app remains part of the current documented
workflow, so a compatible dēzl should not be described as eliminating
the phone or tablet.

FMCSA’s registered list separately names older dēzl models under
identifier GE1D01, including the 780, 785, and OTR/LGV 800, 810, 1000,
and 1010. It does not separately name the newer navigators above in that
row. Current display compatibility and the exact model names in an FMCSA
registration are different facts.

Roadside Inspection and
Data Backup

An authorized safety official may ask to view the current 24-hour
period and the previous seven consecutive days. The app provides an
Inspection view for that purpose.

One transfer path uses a FAT32 USB mass-storage device connected to
the adapter. The other uses Bluetooth to pair with the inspector’s
compatible device, which acts as the network access point to FMCSA web
services. Bluetooth is part of that connected process; it is not a
stand-alone submission method without the inspector’s compatible device
and connection.

Garmin’s manual also calls for the owner manual, driver reference
guide, and a sufficient supply of blank RODS graph grids to be available
in the vehicle. Verify the current documentation list during setup.

Garmin recommends regular USB backups. Records are stored on the
mobile device, and uninstalling the app deletes the retained ELD data
from that device. A backup is also useful when moving the app to another
compatible device.

If the system reports a malfunction, follow the current manual and
FMCSA instructions. The driver and motor carrier have responsibilities
that a short product review should not try to replace.

Limitations:
Basic ELD vs. Managed Fleet Platform

The Garmin eLog is best evaluated as a focused, locally stored HOS
solution. That is useful for some owner-operators, but it is not enough
for every operation.

The verified Garmin source set for this review does not establish
current IFTA reporting, live fleet GPS tracking, dispatch or load-board
functions, TMS integration, or a managed cloud portal. If any of those
is required, verify it directly and compare broader ELD platforms rather

The practical reason to check FMCSA registration is simple: the
carrier should confirm that the exact ELD solution and required software
version appear on the registered list and have not moved to the revoked
list.

FMCSA’s registered list includes three Garmin International entries,
each specifying software version 9.50 or later:

  • Garmin eLog iOS: GE1I01
  • Garmin eLog Android: GE1A01
  • Named dēzl registration: GE1D01

No Garmin eLog entry appeared on the current revoked list at that
check.

What registration
establishes

The Garmin entries identify the registered ELD solution, its ELD
identifiers, the listed software requirement, and its supported
inspection-transfer methods. Garmin, not FMCSA, self-certified that
solution against the ELD technical specifications.

Registration does not mean FMCSA tested or endorsed Garmin eLog. It
does not prove that the adapter fits a particular truck, that a phone or
